Note you cannot do some basic funtions while the 501 is recording, however it does have an Ir blaster to record to your VCR.

Overall, Im not really impressed with this system, we all thought this was product was going to come in and make our Dishplayers obselete. All I see in this product is a Model 4922, with the abilioty to record programming to a hard drive. I was surprised it only took 5 minutes to download and the software, its very stable and looks like its bug Free. The UHF remote control is a Big Plus, along with the 9 button front panel. As far as the hard drive noise, eventhough a fan has been added to the system, its alot more quieter than my Dishplayer.

As of right now, I see no reason to Dump my Dishplayer for a Dp501, its just not worth spending the extra money to replace something that works good now. I would only consider replacing it if you can't stand the software bugs on the Dishplayer. However when I add another PTV unit to my home, it will deffinitly be a Dp501.

Finally, the guide is much improved over older model systems. I found it to be a little slower than the guide on the Dp301, but its alot better than the guide on the 3900 and 4900 series recievers.
